Happy Halloween! I am back from the Fusebox Conference, and I had a great time. It was great to meet those of you who were there, and for those who weren't, you may still have a chance to hear my lovely speaking voice: Hal and Jeff recorded all the sound for all the various talks that were given throughout the weekend, and they plan to put together CDs with the PowerPoint slideshows and the sound for anyone who wants to purchase them.
I wrote a brief synopsis of the conference from my point-of-view on the PHP-Fusebox list, and here it is in syndication:
I had a great time! It was really good to see people face-to-face,
instead of as just text on the screen. I got to meet Mike Britton who
wrote the DevShed article, John Beynon who worked with Synthis getting
Adalon's PHP-Fusebox generator working, and .. well I won't try to
list everyone because I will surely miss people, but it was great to
meet you all.
There were some great talks, and I think the stuff that I was most
excited to see was Adalon (which is amazing! and I don't get paid to
say that), Hal's talk about an OO implementation of Fusebox in CF
(which may be a good way to think about it in PHP as well-- I have yet
to see code, though), and Rey Muradaz gave a great presentation on
legal issues with software and licencing models in general (he's a
real-life lawyer and everything!). Steve Nelson has an amazing tool
for testing Fusebox apps that he said he is going to make
open-source, so we may be able to get it going in PHP. There will be
some issues with getting Fusedocs working properly, since the tool
relies on Fusedocs pretty heavily. John Beynon is doing some neat
stuff with content-management and XML with XSLT that I am curious to
explore some more. Erik Voldengen also has some interesting results
from an experiment he is doing with SES URLs-- he built two (almost)
identical sites called RedViperSystems.com and GreenViperSystems.com,
and is tracking what stuff gets indexed and what doesn't. Pretty cool
stuff!
As for my own presentation, I do have PPT and code, but as part of the
conference Hal and Steve are going to try and recoup some of their
costs by selling CDs with that stuff on it. When (if) they get that
stuff together, I will make sure to let you all know. Everyone's talk
was recorded to MP3, so there will be some wrangling to get everything
assembled in one place. In the event that they don't get that stuff
to CDs for sale, I will most certainly post my code and PPT to
bombusbee.com. The app I have has a database component, it is fully
Fusedoc'ed, and there is a prototype and everything. The DB is
currently in SQL Server, but I will also write a MySQL version. The
app is nothing revolutionary, but for me it was the first time I
strictly used FLiP to go through building an app. It is also an
answer to the request for an example app with a database component to
it.
Anyway, it was great to go and meet people, and to get jazzed about
some new Fusebox ideas. I anticipate some new people signing up for
the list and perhaps some new ideas coming out of the various groups.
Maybe not as revolutionary as last year when Fusebox 3.0 was brand
new, but some good discussions nevertheless.
